Trial Lessons

The trial lesson is an obvious first step toward your ultimate goal of becoming a qualified pilot.

Before you get into the aircraft, you will be given a preflight briefing during which the instructor will go through the effects of the controls and the various procedures he will be demonstrating later. Don't worry if you don't take it all in, you can ask questions of your instructor at any time during the flight.

Safety must be of paramount importance and you will be given a full safety brief before flying.

Once the preflight briefing is over you will be escorted to the aeroplane by your instructor and he will run through the inspection procedure with you. Once again don't worry if you don't take it all in - you won't be tested on it! In fact it is normal procedure for these checks to be carried out with reference to a check list even once you are qualified.

The next step is to get into the left hand seat of the aircraft, which is the normal seat for the pilot to occupy. You will notice that all the aircraft have two sets of flying controls so that they can be handled from either front seat. Whilst on the ground your instructor will refer to check lists, to ensure everything is set up correctly for the flight. Only when you are both happy that you are ready, will your take off begin.

Throughout the flight your instructor will talk you through his actions and the reasons for them. Once airborne you will be given the opportunity to handle the controls yourself.

You will find that the time goes very quickly and before you know it you will be back on the ground. By this time you will probably have decided whether you want to continue your training. If you do, the time in the air for your trial lesson will count towards the 45 hours (minimum) you need for your licence.

If you do decide to continue your training, your instructor will be happy to discuss with you the various options available, including the differences between the Private Pilots Licence (PPL) and the National Private Pilots Licence (NPPL) as well as our discount rates.
